Our Story

Island Song Singing School, is a warm, encouraging and creative space where singers and song writers of all ages can grow in confidence, skill and self-expression through music.

Established in 1997, Island Song Singing School offers singing lessons for children, teens and adults, from complete beginners through to experienced performers. Whether you’re singing for fun, preparing for auditions, writing songs, building vocal technique or developing confidence, lessons are tailored to support each student’s individual voice and goals.

We teach a wide range of musical styles including musical theatre, classical, folk, country, jazz, contemporary, gospel and more, with a strong focus on confidence-building, creativity and performance skills in a supportive environment.

Lessons are available in-person, online, or we can come to you.

We also welcome parents & bubs looking for a relaxed and inclusive learning environment. Our classes are a nurturing early‑years music class designed to support babies’ and young children’s social, emotional, and communication development. Through singing, rhythm, movement, and playful parent–child interactions, we build early skills in connection, co‑regulation, language, and sensory exploration, all while strengthening the bond between little ones and their care givers. We also run sessions in early learning educational settings Songlines: Minis and aged care facilities Songlines: Together, these are our Songline Series. Island Song Singing School was created by Bridget (Bea) as a safe, creative space where people of all ages can explore their voice, express themselves, and feel completely comfortable. After many years of nurturing the school and its community, she is delighted to now welcome her eldest daughter, Lilly, to the teaching team, continuing the family tradition of music, connection, and confidence-building.

At Island Song Singing School, singing is about more than technique, it’s about connection, culture, storytelling, joy and finding your voice.

About Bridget

Bridget "Bea" Cousens (GradDipCouns, BA, M.A.C.A)

Bridget Cousens is a laremairremener woman from lutruwita/Tasmania. Bridget is a professional singer, songwriter, musician and vocal coach with 29 years of experience in music education and a lifetime of performance experience. She is the founder and director of Island Song Singing School, established in 1997.

Bridget is incredibly proud to be the mother of her two daughters, Lilly and Florence Cousens, both professional singers and performers. Bridget’s eldest daughter, Lilly, now also teaches at the school.

Island Song Singing School welcomes students of all ages and experience levels, currently teaching singers from 4 to 80 years old, from complete beginners through to professional performers.

Bridget supports students in all areas of vocal development, including:

  • vocal technique

  • performance skills

  • confidence building

  • audition preparation

  • repertoire selection

  • songwriting and creative expression

In addition to singing, Bridget also plays piano and guitar, incorporating musicianship, accompaniment and performance skills into her teaching.

Over the years, Bridget has performed in numerous theatre productions, including:

  • Women of Troy with Archipelago Productions

  • Invidu with The Old Nick Theatre Company

  • My Fair Lady with the Gilbert and Sullivan Society

  • The Remedy with the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music

  • South Pacific with the Gilbert and Sullivan Society

Bridget has also performed as a soloist with numerous choirs throughout Australia and continues to perform professionally across a wide range of musical styles.

She is also a member of laremairremener Wildflowers, performing alongside her daughters Lilly and Florence at folk and country music events throughout lutruwita.

While classically trained, Bridget has a particular passion for musical theatre, gospel, jazz, country and folk music. As a songwriter herself, she enjoys helping students develop their own artistic voice and confidence in creative performance.

In addition to teaching and performing, Bridget has extensive experience coordinating and running music events across the state, both as a performer and event organiser.

Bridget holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Postgraduate qualification in Psychotherapy and Counselling from the University of Tasmania. Alongside her music career, she also operates her private therapy practice, Cousens Psychotherapy & Counselling.

Whether students are seeking ongoing weekly or fortnightly lessons, or short-term preparation for auditions, performances or special events, Island Song Singing School provides supportive, personalised tuition tailored to individual goals.

Lessons are available in person in Hobart and online.

Passionate about music, creativity and helping others grow in confidence, Bridget brings warmth, professionalism and decades of performance and teaching experience to every lesson, creating a supportive environment where students can develop both their skills and their love of music.

About Lilly

Lilly Cousens

Lilly Cousens is a laremairremener woman from lutruwita/Tasmania. Lilly is professional singer, musician and vocal coach with extensive experience in musical theatre and live performance across lutruwita. She teaches through Island Song Singing School, supporting students in singing and performance in a warm, encouraging and confidence-building environment.

Lilly has performed in numerous musical theatre productions with Musical Theatre Crew, including:

  • Madagascar

  • Aladdin

  • Grease

  • Into the Woods

  • Frozen

  • High School Musical

She has also performed in Women of Troy with Archipelago Productions.

Throughout her schooling, Lilly has performed in numerous choirs and vocal ensembles and regularly sang as a cantor, developing strong vocal leadership, harmony and performance skills from a young age.

Alongside her theatre experience, Lilly is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, playing trumpet, piano, guitar and mandolin. She enjoys mentoring and encouraging emerging young musicians, supporting students in both their instrumental and vocal development, performance preparation and confidence on stage.

Lilly performs professionally at events throughout Tasmania and has experience performing across a variety of musical styles and settings.

She is also a member of the folk and country group laremairremener Wildflowers, performing alongside her sister Florence and mother Bridget at folk and country events, and community performances across the state.

Passionate about music, creativity and helping others grow in confidence, Lilly brings warmth, enthusiasm and strong performance experience to her teaching and mentoring work.

Songlines: Minis

Early Years Educational Settings

Songlines: Minis is a warm, nurturing, therapy‑informed music and wellbeing program for children, weaving together singing, creativity, emotional development and connection in a joyful, engaging environment.

Created by Bridget “Bea” Cousens - psychotherapist, counsellor, singing teacher and founder of Island Song Singing School (est. 1997) - Songlines: Minis supports children to build confidence, self-expression, creativity and social connection through music.

Bea brings together 30 years of experience in music education, a lifetime of singing performance and decades of supporting children and families in therapy and music, creating sessions that are gentle, inclusive, encouraging and tailored to each age group.

Songline Minis is a neurodiversity-affirming and inclusive program. As an Aboriginal woman, Bea also incorporates culturally safe and grounding practices that support connection, belonging, respect and emotional wellbeing within the learning environment through music, storytelling and community.

Songlines: Minis classes are nurturing music and wellbeing sessions designed to support babies’ and young children’s social, emotional and communication development. Through singing, rhythm, movement and playful interactions, children are supported to build early skills in connection, confidence, language, creativity and sensory exploration in a safe and welcoming environment.

Sessions include: • Singing • Music and movement • Rhythm and percussion activities • Confidence and self-expression building • Emotional wellbeing and calming activities • Storytelling through music and imagination • Group participation and social connection • Relaxation and grounding experiences • Creative exploration through song and sound

Our focus is not performance or perfection, but joy, confidence, creativity, wellbeing and helping children feel safe to explore their voice and themselves through music.

Programs align with the Early Years Learning Framework supporting: • Identity • Wellbeing • Confidence and involvement in learning • Communication and language development • Connection and contribution to community • Belonging, being and becoming

(Department for Education, Children and Young People, Tasmania, 2024).

Sessions are tailored to each age group and centre environment.

Available for childcare centres, kindergartens and play groups throughout lutruwita/Tasmania.

 

About Bea: 

Bea is a registered psychotherapist & counsellor with the Australian Counselling Association and runs her own therapy practice Cousens Psychotherapy & Counselling. Bea is also the founder, owner and Vocal Coach at Island Song Singing School

Bea also has two teenage daughters who are singers and performers and are the strong foundations of the Songline: Minis community. As a Mum, singing teacher and therapist Bea understands the importance of singing and music in little minis lives.

BOOKING DETAILS

SESSION FEES

• 30-minute session $300

• 45-minute session $400

• 1-hour session $480

Please talk with us about how often you would like to have your sessions, for example, weekly, fortnightly, monthly.

Bookings can be mixed aged groups or room based. Please discuss this with Bea when booking, several sessions can be done in the same day. 

Programs can be delivered across multiple age groups during one visit, including: • Babies • Toddlers • Kindergarten/Pre-Kinder

Session fees are all inclusive travel costs. 

Songlines: Minis will bring everything needed for the session, including musical resources and wellbeing-based activities. If there is anything your service needs to prepare prior to the visit, this will be communicated beforehand.

BOOKINGS & CANCELLATIONS

We recommend booking 4–6 weeks in advance to secure preferred dates and times.

Payment is due by the day of the session unless otherwise arranged.

Cancellations within 7 days of the booked session may incur the full session fee.

Need to reschedule? No problem - we simply ask for as much notice as possible, with a minimum of 2–4 weeks preferred where possible.

Health and Safety - Please advise Bea if children are unwell or centre has had a recent spread of illness. Bea attends many educational settings and loves to keep all her clients and family well!
